Indian Singing
The Bhakti-Singing class has been existing
since 1992.
It is held once a week on sundays.
We study and sing Indian Bhajans and
Kirtans. These songs express devotion to the divine. The main focus is
not on musical skill but on joy and dedication to singing and making
music.
Most songs are in Hindi and originate from
the north Indian musical tradition. The singers are accompanied on
Harmonium, Guitar, Tabla, Tanpura and finger-cymbals.
Bhajans and Kirtans are quite popular in
India and can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. Singing Bhajans
aims at calming the doubting and materialistic mind and turning the
heart towards God.
Bhakti means
devoted love to god. This love can be expressed through prayer,
singing, rituals and service.
